Polygonatum odoratum, commonly known as Solomon’s Seal, is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows naturally in moist, shaded deciduous forests across Estonia. It is easily recognized by its gracefully arching stems, which reach 50–70 cm in height and bear alternately arranged, oval-shaped leaves. In May, the plant produces hanging, white, bell-shaped flowers beneath the stems, which emit a pleasant fragrance and attract pollinators.
As a low-maintenance species, Solomon’s Seal prefers partially to fully shaded locations with moist, well-drained soil. In cultivated settings, it is often used to enhance shaded planting areas, woodland gardens, and naturalistic landscapes. It pairs well with other shade-loving plants such as ferns and hostas. The plant propagates through rhizomes and seeds.
Although historically used in folk medicine for ailments such as sleep disorders, lung conditions, and joint pain, it is important to note that Polygonatum odoratum is moderately toxic. Ingesting the berries, in particular, may cause symptoms similar to those associated with lily of the valley poisoning, though typically milder in effect.
