Native to North-America where grows 30-40m tall.
Large intense green pinnate leaves are up to 60cm long. "Nuts" are 3-5 cm in diameter. The kernels are edible but hard to separate from the strong shell.
Wood is brown and highly prized.
Grows well in Estonia, more frost hardy than English walnut (J.regia) but less than J.mandshurica.
