Amur cork tree (Phellodendron amurense)

Picturesque tree from Northern China. Large, yellowish-green pinnate leaves and grayish corky bark. Grows up to 20m tall. If growing in sufficient light, the branches start from low and give the whole tree beautiful ornate shape.

Flowers in June with small green flowers that are very rich in nectar. Fruits are small black berries that smell of resin. Important plant in Chinese and Japanese folk medicine.

It prefers well-drained fertile soil. Young plants have to be protected from northern winds. Grows both in shade and full sunlight but need sufficient light to develop characteristic wide and branching shape.
