Japanese red pine grows in East Asia - Korea, China and Japan - in north at lowlands, in south mostly in mountains. It is closely related to Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) but has longer needles that are yellowish. It is popular tree in temple gardens where it is often shaped and kept small. In natural habitat it grows 25-30m tall.

There are many dwarf varieties of Japanese red pine but our trees are native form.

The soil preferences are similar to scots pine - lighter soil and full sun. Young trees should be protected from elks and roe deers.
