Hornbeam belongs to birch family. In past it was common in Estonia, but became extinct during little ice age. The closest hornbeam forest to Estonia grow in Lithuania.
Grows as a small tree, upt to 10m high or tall bush.
Requires fertile, well-drained soil and protection from northern winds. Tolerates shade so it can be grown under the protection of larger trees.
