Common ivy grows naturally in Saarema where it is a relic from the warmer period. In central Europe it can climb over 20m high but in Estonia usually grows as ground-cover because of winter frosts. Still the warm winters of last decade have allowed ivy to start climbing in Estonia too.
Common ivy is evergreen vine with dark green five-lobed leaves. It clings to vertical support by aerial roots, thus being able to climb almost smooth surfaces.
The flowers are rich in nectar, fruits are purple-black berries. As flowers develop only on large plants it probably will not flower in Estonia.
Common ivy is very popular ground-cover plant. If on wants to make it climb, it needs to be planted into shady fertile place, protected from winds and direct sunlight.
